AWS Preps Real-Time Racing Stats for Formula 1 (SCN)

With choices few for a sports-starved world dealing with the ongoing pandemic, Amazon Web Services is making sure one of the few live competitive offerings out there is as entertaining as possible for fans watching from home. Beginning July 3-5 at the Formula 1 Rolex Grosser Preis Von Österreich 2020 in Austria, AWS will debut the first of several new, real-time racing statistics rolling out during the 2020 racing season, with the launch of “Car Performance Scores,” which details each individual car’s performance, and compares head-to-head with other vehicles during the race.

The stats https://aws.amazon.com/f1/ are gathered using a range of AWS services, including machine learning, giving fans the ability to compare drivers and cars and have a better handle on race outcomes during the event.

“Formula 1 racing mixes physics and human performance, yielding powerful, but complex data that AWS is helping them to harness. Our existing relationship with F1 has already produced statistics that have brought fans into the race paddocks, and our study of race car aerodynamics is influencing vehicle designs for the 2022 season,” said Mike Clayville, VP of worldwide commercial sales for AWS. “This year, we’re thrilled to extend the power of F1 data in the cloud and unlock new insights that help fans understand more of F1’s rich complexity.”

The new offering is made possible via 300-odd sensors on each F1 car, generating more than 1.1 million data points per second. The new “Car Performance Scores” insights will be displayed on-screen during the races, providing fans with a breakdown of a car’s performance using four metrics: low- and high-speed, straight line speed, and car handling.

Other upcoming AWS-powered F1 insights include “Exit Speed,” “Predicted Pit Stop Strategy,” “Pit Window,” “Battle Forecast,” “Pit Strategy Battle,” and “Tire Performance,” all coming between now and December.

“Over the past two years, Formula 1 has embraced AWS’s services to perform intense and dynamic data analysis. The F1 Insights we’re delivering together are bringing fans closer to the track than ever before, and unlocking previously untold stories and insights from behind the pit wall,” said Rob Smedley, chief engineer for Formula 1. “We’re excited to be expanding this successful relationship to bring even more insights to life, allowing fans to go deeper into the many ways that drivers and racing teams work together to affect success.”
